Alexandra

 

Approximately 15 minutes from Taggerty.

 

Located near the Goulburn River, Alexandra is surrounded by rich pastoral land, mountains and forests. The town centre has historical buildings dating back to the 1850s when gold was discovered in the area. Today Alexandra is an important commercial hub for surrounding towns including Acheron, Taggerty, Eildon and Thornton. It has a selection of shops and warm and friendly cafes & pubs.

 

  • Alexandra Timber Tramway & Museum – Station Street, Alexandra – Generally open 2-3 Sunday’s a month. There you can see a recreation of the bush sawmill and tramway era of the Rubicon Forest from 1900 to 1950. We have also rescued and preserved a wide range of industrial locomotives, rolling stock and machinery. The museum has 10 locos listed on the active rolling stock register. Our museum features a vast showcase of history exhibits, from both local, and the nearby timber logging industry in the Rubicon Forest. Additional facilities include toilet and picnic facilities.

 

  • The Great Victoria Rail Trail - Is one of the longest Rail Trails in Victoria and is world renowned for it’s diversity and amazing scenery. Jump on the trail at Alexandra, the scenery, wildlife and terrain are worthwhile no matter what part you ride.

 

  • Lucky Mine Lookout & Mc Kenzie Nature Conservation Reserve – Off Mount Pleasant Road, Alexandra - Gives views over the Alexandra township and the surrounding countryside and has a wide variety of wildflowers and native grasses.

Mansfield

 

Approximately 1 hours drive from Taggerty. 

 

Nestled at the foot of the Great Dividing Range Mansfield is a scenic town offering great food, local produce and boutique shopping. Spend the day wandering the shops, have a bit to eat and then maybe take a scenic drive up to the base of Mount Buller.

  • Mansfield Zoo – 1064 Mansfield-Woodspoint Road, Mansfield - Open 364 Days a Year – Exotic and native animals on 30 acres of picturesque parkland featuring lovely views across the Delatite Valley to Mt Buller. Lion and Meerkat feeding happen each weekend from 1:30pm. Have a picnic or BBQ in their undercover facilities.

 

  • Mansfield Hedge Maze – 678 Piries Gough Bay Road, Gough Bay – Check website for opening hours or phone 5777-3190. A 40m x 40m Maze to keep the kids entered and intrigued as they find the hidden Gnomes.
